Rivers are much better than seas. A river can have gushing waters or just a small trickle or anywhere between. It will rush along, eager to get to where it's going, or lazily go along with all the time in the Immortal World. Whatever the amount or speed, the river will carve its own path through earth and stone. Nothing can stop the flowing waters, not even a dam. Through a crack, overflowing out the top, carving another path, the river will find a way out. Seas don't move that way. They sit there, would become stagnant if not for some river flowing into it, or for storms above it.
Floating lazily on her back, in full mermaid form, DieNah relished the feel of the warm waters around her. Her eyes closed, she enjoyed the constant movement, and the choice brought by the river. Unlike if she were in a sea, she could choose to float in the river or to dance on the bank if she wanted. She wanted to move around, to see the world, and forge her own path. All these things frowned upon by the society of Water. Her brother had kept her locked up for so long during and after the War, DieNah was restless and rebellious. She would do almost anything to get away and be free.
Slitting her eyes open, DieNah caught one of the many branches dangling low above the river. Oh yes, this was definitely worth whatever her brother might say of her sneaking away.
