In 2017, the world was beginning to realize a new era of industrialization. Gentech, the revolutionaries of computer engineering; they designed a new code structure in order to make machines run more efficiently. They made them smarter.
Initially this was seen as a man made miracle. Machines did everything for us, and nobody really complained about life being easier. After a few months of settling in to this new comfort, everybody soon forgot what it used to be like. Then Gentech unveiled their new plan. They were going to end all the wars around the world and effectively make world peace using their machines. Their theory was that machines could go and things that humans couldn't and they could do it non-lethally.
For this, they designed the PeaceKeepers. These were humanoid form robots that were programmed with all conventional human war tactics so that they could recognize them and react appropriately. They would use this to defuse situations strategically, without killing, and with minimal harm done to the humans. They would only kill if it was absolutely necessary; to save more human lives. This was great in theory; and after the first wave of technology from Gentech, everybody was confident it would work. This was the beginning of the end.
The PeaceKeepers started capturing innocent civilians. In fact, they began capturing everybody. Gentech's algorithm had one fatal flaw: the PeaceKeepers only objective was to obtain world peace, with minimal bloodshed. As humans were responsible for war, they were enslaved and forced to live in a city built by the machines. To do this they implanted every human being with a chip called the GT-6250 at the base of the neck. This chip controlled their minds, obliterating free will. If you thought about fighting back, you would keel over from nausea.
And there were many who died fighting back, as the PeaceKeepers were too familiar with human war tactics. Many people were forced to go underground, and we formed the Resistance. Among us were people from all walks of life, and the techies and surgeons joined forces to remove the chips from the necks of us and those we managed to save.
The cycle has continued for three generations now. They would make a defense and we would find a way around it, but we are now at a loss. The PeaceKeepers have manufactured a new chip to replace the old one. It’s called the GT-8100, and it’s got a fail-safe mechanism implanted within it. If the chip is disturbed, it explodes and kills the host.
Where do you fit in this automatic world? Are you a member of our Resistance, set to take down these machines at any cost? Perhaps you are a citizen of Machine City, bound by microchip and seemingly never to be free. Maybe you are a Wayward Wanderer, living your life in the wastelands and evading trouble of any kind. The year is 2065, and this is the Scarlet Tide.
